SAN JUAN — The new interim Hidalgo County judge should improve the quality of life in the colonias, invest in public infrastructure and support both immigration and health care reforms, said Juanita Valdez, director of La Union del Pueblo Entero (LUPE).
The Commissioner’s Court is going to appoint this Tuesday a new judge after J.D. Salinas resigned yesterday to become the regional administrator of the U.S. General Service Administration.
We have to remind the next County Judge that he has to respond to the community,” Valdez said.
Valdez also said that the next elected official has an obligation to bring electrical service to colonias that still do not have it.Hidalgo County has about 934 colonias with a population of more than 156,000 people. There are 134 Hidalgo county colonias identified as distressed areas with the highest health risk because of the lack of platting, water or wastewater disposal.
Texas has identified more than 1,786 colonias and most of them are located along the border with Mexico.
