Wozniak, the first speaker in the Distinguished Speaker Series, spoke for about 45 minutes with four UTPA students who interviewed him about the challenges in his career, the best technologies for education, how to resolve the lack of access to computers and communications called the digital divide, and even how much he get when he got his first check.

Steve Wozniak, cofounder of Apple Computer Inc., will be the first UTPA Distinguished Speaker on Tuesday, October 20, at the Fine Arts Auditorium.

Speaking fast, Wozniak said he wanted to be an engineer since he was a sixth grader and remembered he used to be paid 35 dollars a week.

Wozniak said the digital divide was not exactly a big issue in the United States, but it is a big one in African countries and other developing countries in the world.

“Make sure you love what you do,” said Wozniak to the audience. “Be around people like you”.

Wozniak was awarded in 2000 the Heinz Award for Technology, The Economy and Employment for designing the first personal computer.

He said it is not only necessary to train teachers in computers and other technologies, but also in programming computers, which “is the most relevant academic tool.”

During his staying in the Valley, Wozniak spent some time having dinner with students.
